Call For Entries: Saint Violentine 2012
December 29, 2011
About Saint Violentine (San Violentin)
Saint Violentine is an annual event that invites graphic designers, visual artists, illustrators, photographers and people related to the visual communication arts to critically reflect on violence, to make visible its various manifestations and to promote the rejection of violence as method of conflict resolution. Saint Violentine is celebrated each February 13 and seeks to highlight the absurd omnipresence of hatred and intolerance in human life at all levels, from interpersonal relationships to the coexistence of nations. Saint Violentine ’s name, date and the symbolism of the event are an intentional parody of St. Valentine's Day.
Theme of the Call for Entries 2012
If you ask almost anyone, he/she will tell you that she/he loathes and rejects violence. But all human beings at some point in their lives have exercised it, either led by the illusion of some personal gain or just following misleading impulses. Violence is a hidden threat that leaves terrible consequences but presents itself to us in seductive and unexpected ways.
"The hidden side of violence" is the theme we have chosen this year. We want you to help us expose these hidden intentions are often tempting, involuntary or coldly calculated and that not always appear as they truly are.
This call wants to disarm violence and reinstate the human subject as protagonist of a transformation towards cooperation, respect and harmony. We believe that the results of such change will help to create a more inclusive and aware society.
What are the Rules for the 2012 Edition?
For this seventh edition we plan to present all the received entries and display them at the “Naranjilla Mecanica” gallery in Quito-Ecuador. Among the entries the organizers will choose the best twenty to be displayed in large format. All the other entries will be printed in a smaller format. After the event all the pieces will be permanently published at www.sanviolentin.com together with work from previous editions.

Origins of Saint Violentine
Saint Violentine is a fictitious celebration conceived and implemented by Eduardo Villacís and Guido Álvarez from the Centro de Investigaciones Fantásticas - USFQ in 2006 with the objective of promoting critical thinking on violence around the world. Saint Violentine happens every February 13th and seeks to highlight the absurd omnipresence of violence, hate and intolerance in human life at every level, from interpersonal relationships to global international affairs. Every year, along with the show, our festivity celebrates a better world: a world free of violence.
